Project Description +

Our client had completed major landscaping works and required garden storage and a new green house. The brief required these additional buildings to be discrete with the least possible visual impact. To reduce their mass, the two buildings were combined into one prefabricated timber and glass structure which was built off site as a kit of parts.

The plan was a simple linear arrangement with the two spaces connected by an internal sliding door, hung on the partition wall. Materiality was chosen to act almost as camouflage; dark stained spruce let the mass of the building dissolve into the shadows, while a black sheet metal roof and toughened glass allowed a controlled growing environment that is resilient enough to resist the coastal environment.

Placing the shed to the north let the greenhouse receive maximum sunlight, while offering the shortest facade to the house.

On site assembly was very fast, thanks to the prefabrication which also reduced the interior’s exposure to the English seaside weather.
