Project Description +
The young professional couple; an illustrator & publisher, required some simple alterations to their home anticipating the arrival of their first child. We were appointed to reconfigure the combined kitchen and living area and to update the bathroom and en-suite to the 2 bedroom apartment, just a stones-throw from Borough Market.
A quiet study space was required to enable working-from-home during the early years of the new born’s arrival but to be contained within the main living space to maintain family interaction. This led to the design of an integrated study & kitchen ‘pod’, conceived as one large piece of fitted joinery carefully inserted into the rear of the relatively generous room.
As with all projects, budget was important so having initially mooted the desire for solid oak joinery, we finally adopted a Douglas Fir laminated birch plywood frame, a more affordable option. All bespoke kitchen cabinets were faced with the same veneer, whilst a marine blue Formica laminated plywood was chosen for the counters and breakfast bar.
The existing bathroom & en-suite layout was perfectly functional and sanitaryware was in good order but required some adjustments to suit the client’s taste. The chosen strategy was to carefully retrofit as opposed to a complete overhaul which also helped reduce overall cost.
New marbled floor and wall tiles were installed whilst all new panelling to existing cupboards was replaced and finished with oak veneered plywood. New bespoke black aluminium glass shower screens colour matched the new shower tray and powder coated towel rails culminates as a balanced composition of 3 principal material finishes for both bathrooms.
