Project Description +

We were commissioned to undertake a feasibility study for a two bed house for an existing client’s daughter who was returning from Agricultural college to work and live on the farm with her young family.

Initial conversations with the client revealed a nascent interest in local agricultural building types: the simple barn and grain silo. We explored different formal arrangements whilst narrowing a brief to create a residential dwelling that was contextually grounded with a nod to the rural vernacular.

The resultant proposal comprises a single storey, dual pitched barn form which is cranked to create privacy and a sense of enclosure to a private garden which in turn looks outwards, framing views to distant landscapes.

A glazed cloister takes advantage of the southern aspect allowing solar gain to warm the internal spaces.

The silo form at the eastern end accommodates a garage at ground level with the master bedroom suite above.

Materiality of the barn exterior and silo made use of an extensive stockpile of reclaimed bricks, corrugated metal sheet and clay roof tiles of which could be re purposed for the cladding of the silo completing a sustainable and contextual design response.
