Project Description +

Eckford Chong was appointed to explore options for the internal rearrangement of the existing (4 bedroom) house in Brixton, the project consisted of a new kitchen at ground with utility WC, a new plywood staircase to the basement and alterations to the master bedroom at first floor.

The existing kitchen was replaced and rationalised with the chimney breast removed, and the small area with the boiler and rear door separated to form a new utility/cloakroom. A new double galley kitchen was installed with bespoke timber cabinetry to either side, and new double doors onto the courtyard in place of the existing sash window.

A mat of ceramic tiles in the centre of the floor is heated, leaving the walls free of radiators and creating a comfortable environment for bare feet. The aesthetic is taken from mid 20th century furniture design, with expressed frames in dark timber recessed drawer fronts and door panels. The detailing (including a bench seat with concealed storage) represents free standing, delicate ‘pieces’.

On the first floor, by connecting the master bedroom and guest bedroom, a larger suite is created with a walk-in wardrobe to the rear which is separated from the existing bedroom space by a curtain. The dressing room is fitted with bespoke furniture in a different, more expressive style, consistent in its aesthetic with the kitchen cabinets. We also took on the opportunity to play on the curves and arches of the ground floor (and the original fireplaces) in the partition between the two spaces.

Minimal, yet precise detailing and soft off white hues create a restful and calming environment. The busier dressing room can be closed off with a sumptuous, heavy golden curtain offering further seclusion, warmth and privacy. The large bank of wardrobes in the bedroom is finished in matte off white to match the room with a simple window treatment to the street front. Large paper Isamu Noguchi pendant light sculptures echo the formal motif of curves and arches - borrowing further from the mid century aesthetic.
