Project Description +

This project to reconfigure a large detached farm house within extensive grounds in the South Downs National Park, was commissioned in late 2016.

The clients disliked the (1980’s pastiche) arts and crafts styling of the existing property, in particularly the dark brick which they found to be oppressive.

With small windows at ground floor and disproportionate dormer windows in the roof, the house needed a more ordered and open facade which would let natural light in and permit long views out to the surrounding countryside. With no direct access to the gardens from the main living areas, connections between inside and out were limited and convoluted.

The proposals sought to open up the internal spaces, creating a more family friendly arrangement and provide open plan living in the kitchen and dining area whilst unlocking connections with the garden and the views beyond.

The large terrace is accessed from a replanned living space while new large dormer windows bring in light and sit well with a cleaner, more modern aesthetic.

White slurry rendered walls and timber cladding to upper level completes a contemporary appearance that is sensitive to its context whilst compliant with strict National Park conservation design codes.

The project was awarded full planning permission in June 2017.
