Project Description +

At the start of the year, Vinyoga (as they then were) moved from a small temporary rented accommodation into their new home at the vibrant, Deptford Market Yard. Working closely with the client, we established a brief to create an adaptable space for all (centred on the practice and teaching of Yoga) on a modest budget.

The project was conceived as a light touch, loose fit occupation of an existing shell. This aesthetic took its lead from the (inhabitation by re-use and regeneration) work that was undertaken by Ash Sakula, Rogers Stirk Harbour & Partners, Farrer Huxley, PTE and BDP, when they created the market in 2016.

Occupying a large single space above the historic carriage ramp, the new rooms and furniture are designed to reveal their construction. Nuts and bolts, ducting and plumbing are proprietary, inexpensive and left on show.

We made the minimal necessary intervention and concealed nothing. The result is a comfortable, unassuming and welcoming place that can be quickly adapted or reconfigured. This practical and determined approach is vitally relevant as the growing business reacts to the inevitable and necessarily changing demands of market forces that bear on such small independent organisations in an ever more competitive and pressured environment.
